British Values

British Values at Kirklevington Primary School

Our curriculum promotes the British Values of:

Democracy

At Kirklevington Primary School, we have a school parliament. We encourage pupils to voice their opinions and to listen to the views of others. Pupils have opportunities to express their ideas in lessons, debates and in pupil voice groups, such as sports leaders and as Head (and deputy) boy and girl. Pupils have opportunities to vote to express their opinions and learn about Parliament in the PSHE curriculum.

The Rule of Law

Understanding the importance of rules is a key element of school life. Our curriculum intent focusses on respecting others. We discuss the importance of rules and laws through our school assemblies and also when dealing with behaviour in school. We encourage our pupils to distinguish right from wrong and help pupils to understand that living under the rule of law protects individuals.  Our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from the Police, Fire Service etc. help to reinforce our messages.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.  As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely. We support pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.  Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms through our e-safety and PSHE lessons. We celebrate Remembrance Day annually and learn about the role of the armed forces.

Mutual Respect

As a Unicef Rights Respecting School, Respect is promoted across school and it is deeply embedded in all that we do.  Our curriculum intents focusses on Respectful behaviours, respecting the rights of others and respecting the environment. Pupils design class charters.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Our curriculum provides opportunities through a wide range of subjects to enhance pupils understanding of different faiths and beliefs. This includes through religious education studies; PSHE work; welcoming visitors and enjoying a depth of study about other cultures and belief systems including during themed weeks.
