A Stockton Borough primary school has been nationally recognised for its efforts to promote sporting opportunities for its pupils and the local community.
Kirklevington Primary in Yarm has achieved gold level in the Sainsbury’s School Games mark, a government led scheme which rewards schools for their commitment to and development of competition, school sport and physical education.
To achieve gold the school had to provide all pupils with two hours of physical education each week and engage at least 50 per cent of students in extracurricular sporting activity every week. Staff also had to support youngsters identified as having a sporting talent to help them develop their sporting potential. They also had to forge links with local sports clubs and promote sport within school and the local community via the Sainsbury’s School Games.
Kirklevington is the first and only gold accredited Stockton School for this academic year.
Head teacher of Kirklevington Primary, Justine Moralee, said: “We are proud to be the first Stockton school to receive the Sainsbury’s School Games gold mark. We offer a lot of opportunities throughout the school to foster a love of sporting activity and we ensure we also provide training for our teaching and support staff to make sure that they can support our young people to find a sport which suits them.”
Councillor Ann McCoy, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Not only does physical activity improve health and wellbeing but it can teach young people important life skills such as respect for the rules of the game, being part of a team and working towards a personal goal. Kirklevington Primary’s commitment and determination to sport has certainly paid off and now they are gold standard. Many congratulations to them for gaining this well-deserved recognition.”
Stockton School Sports Partnership has worked with the school in their bid to gain the gold mark and has provided enjoyable and challenging sporting activities as well as a calendar of competitive events in which the children can compete.
Any Stockton schools wishing to take part in Sainsbury School Games mark can reapply at the end of this academic year.
